How to Prevent Your Cat from Scratching Your Furniture

Some cats will scratch on things around the house, such as sofas, chairs, and mattresses. If your cat has been picking at your furniture and you would like to know what to do to prevent your furniture from being scratched, then here are a few ideas.

Buy your cat a scratching pad to scratch on. There are carpeted scratching posts and well scratch pads sold in pet stores and online. You may want to buy a few scratch pads and place them in the rooms where you have furniture. When you first have the scratchpad at your house, put your cat on the pad and gently scrape it’s paws against the pad so that it knows to scratch the pad and not your furniture.

If your cat is calm and will allow you to apply something to their nails, then you may want to purchase cat nail caps. Cat nail caps are caps that are placed over the cat’s claws to prevent problem scratching. These nail caps are a good alternative to declawing a cat. You can buy cat nail caps at pet stores.

Another way to prevent problem scratching is to spray areas of the furniture with a no-scratch spray that you can buy from a pet store. No scratch sprays usually have a scent that deters cats from going near it. The sprays are nontoxic and would probably be best if you used it often.

If you see that your cat is starting to scratch at your furniture, you may want to firmly yell “No!”. You might also want to make a little noise that could scare the cat away from the furniture. My cat is afraid of the sound of plastic bags, so in order to deter him, I rustle around a few plastic bags to make some noise. Remember though, that the cat is just following its instincts to scratch, so try not to be too harsh.

You may want to try one or all of these ideas to help prevent your cat from scratching your furniture. Declawing is up to the owner’s preference, however, I will not recommend it. Also, you may want to use furniture protectors, such as blankets or slipcovers if all else fails.
